That's awful if they're trying to teach autistic kids in a mainstream way, trying to pound square pegs into round holes. Definitely not the best approach.

Wow, I haven't been here in some time. Nice to see the thread is still going. One thing that struck me again, was going through the main part of the parenting forum and reading some of the other threads, how alien the issues that they have with their children seem to me.

Anyway here's something to amuse you, before breakfast a few days ago, my son got up and started doing this on our keyboard, I call it "The Phantom of the Opera in flannel pyjamas"

My son uses an iPod now for his basic communication as he still doesn't talk. Still not toilet trained although we haven't really tried for a long time, although I do talk about it with him as much as I can. I'm keen for this to happen as changing the nappies of an active boy who has a healthy appetite wore thin about 3 years ago.

That's great, love the title! Mine has recently started banging on our keyboard too. One of these days I should put a few videos together showing how much he's changed, and he is changing a lot right now ... I don't have too many videos showing how he was when was younger though because I almost always shut off the recorder when he started screaming.

Nice, both my kids do stuff like this. I am hoping they will eventually take a real interest in learning and instrument.

New video is up, "Meet the Number Guys."

We used animation software for this one, it's our first fully-animated video.

We got our son's evaluations for Kindergarten in the mail today (we still have another meeting to do). His results were dominated by terms like "very poor, below average, clinically significant, low" ... There were a few "averages" in there but you get the idea. The only real highlight is that his letter-word identification abilities are in the top 99.9% for his age group but he was compared to a 1 and a half year old in other areas. Not a very fun read but it's what I was expecting, I would have been more concerned had his issues been overlooked.

Not very fun those reports. We got a Vineland II once, as best as I could tell me son scored below the 0.1th percentile in some areas, and 1-2 percentile at best. it was depressing reading at the time as it put in black and white what I had to some extent been glossing over or trying to make seem less than it was.
Just a piece of paper now.

Yeah, my son gets similar results. The only thing he scores in the average range is gross motor...he starts kindergarten this year as well. The program he will be in is a partnership with an autism school so it's the closest thing we are going to get to outside placement without a huge war with the school.

He is finally going to be getting home-based ABA, starting this week. It took forever to find someone that my insurance would accept that did not have a waiting list. They evaluated him and said that his biggest issue (aside from the sensory stuff) is lack of joint attention so they are going to work on that before anything else as he really can't learn much at all without joint attention. I am hoping for the best with this.

Glad he liked it. We probably won't be doing any more fridge videos for a while, we've had a couple of videos (the shapes and the animal ABC's) that have begun to rack up thousands of hits so we will probably go more in that direction.

We were hoping to have the 100 videos done by this time of the year, ha ha. The stuff we've been doing has been getting more involved so now we are saying we will have 100 done by the end of the year.

I understand, you have to have a somewhat warped sense of humor to appreciate the fridge. :D Some of the other stuff attracts a lot more clicks.

Yeah general preschool stuff like colors, shapes etc attracts the most hits especially if it has music or is a song. We are trying to make more videos like this to attract more viewers/subscribers...hopefully they will check out our other videos.

Our shapes video has gone viral and has 47,000 hits now! Got about 16,000 overnight! We did not do anything special to promote it.

Edit. It's now 79k hits since I posted this this morning. I guess people really like shapes.

Just wondering? 99% of the posting is about Aspergers related matters. Would other parents be interested as speech therapy and speech delay is a big issue for us.

Hello, everyone. Just arrived here. My daughter is five and now starting to make 3 word phrases. Although she has a delayed speech, she is really strong and trying to make herself understood. Advice: I understand that having an AS diagnose is a "relief" to most parents. But do not give up on your autistic child just because you do not understand him. What you are giving up, really, is your abillity to understand a new language. Sorry about my inability to speak English, but I'm Portuguese so... I'm a little rusty. Anyway, I'm glad that you are here. ***
