It's a soul torturing job with a child incapable of accepting or returning affection.

I had trouble with this too. Having a cat as a child really helped me learn the concept of "social grooming." Their fur is soft and pleasent to touch, and when I pet my cat she would pur, which my mother told me meant that she liked me. I liked that my cat liked me, because I liked her too. I have heard of animals such as dogs, cats, cows, ect helping other children communicate. Petting the animals and taking care of them can also be very therapeutic for reasons other than socialization. Perhaps iluvgsus can try AAT(animal-assisted therapy) with her child, or she can simply acquire a family pet, as animal therapy may help with her child's social and sensory issues.
