Thanks for sharing your story. Diagnoses can evolve.

One thing that you didn't mention that's always a focus for early autism diagnosis is delay in language development.

Nostromo that was a great story!! ! I also think it was fair!! !

As to address the questions on our sons speech he has no developmental delays. The issues are more on interaction. Example a little boy his age came up to him and said " What is your name mine is Oliver" Our son was quiet for a bit then just repeated Oliver. He just doesnt engage in "typical" conversation like the other children do. Another example a woman in the elevator told our son "oh you must be 3 years old" Our son responded with telling her all the colors a mini cooper comes in and that you can get them painted with the British Flag on the roof also. Where did that come from? He had a mini cooper cake for his 3rd birthday......

Our son is hooked on Volkswagons! He can tell you the make and model of just about any car out there. He knows what most of the teachers at his school drive! LOL! Sometimes when he meets someone new, he will ask them "what kind of car do you drive?" He likes mini coopers, but VW's are it for him. We took him to a VW car show that had old bugs and buses----He was in heaven!! !

:D Sounds like DS - an example: he was chatting with a friend, who was telling a story about how a geometry teacher made him laugh by saying "don't make your angle wobbly or it will look drunk" and DS needed the joke explained. After I explained that drunks are wobbly, and that it was funny because lines in a drawing can't be wobbly, he thoughtfully responded..."well, maybe if you made an angle out of straws, and put pipe cleaners inside them, then you could soak the pipe cleaners with beer or something and then an angle could be drunk."

(I think this kind of literalness is wonderful; I giggled about it for quite some time.)

It is funny and I do find it very endearing. So many things about our son I just love and appreciate his abilities. Nothing angers me more than when someone finds out about his diagnosis and they say oh I am sooooo sorry. They just dont get how great our kids are and how society needs out of the box thinkers like our children in order to progress!! !! Drives me nuts and takes everything in me not say and I am sooooooooo sorry you are ignorant ;)

I hadn't put this into words, but it is exactly how I feel. I get instantly agitated when someone says "I'm so sorry". What I'm sorry about, is how it took so long to figure out what was up, and how to help at school, and when I don't manage the triggers (especially when I know better!). those are the things that I'm sorry about. I am sorry whenever my son's feelings are hurt because of idiots.

I am not sorry he is who he is.

I third this. And my husband feels the same way. We will have so many memories when our son is older. He's such a quirky kid, and we really enjoy him just the way he is. Too bad other people don't see him with our eyes.

I wonder why cars are so often the special interest when our kids are young???? My daughter was fixated on cars as well and really loved HHR's, all Toyotas, and Mini Coopers. Now she loves smart cars. Long before she could read she recognized various makes and models of cars.

This morphed into license plate fixation. She knows all 50 license plates and gets a big kick out of seeing the more obscure ones on the road. My phone is full pictures of her posing next to plates we see in parking lots-her most coveted ones are Alaska, Mexico (she is trying to collect all the states of Mexico) and Hawaii-yes we have found those!

I have often wondered that myself. I wonder if it is because they can categorize them? For awhile my son had trouble understanding that cars moved around all the time. He thought the same cars should always be where he had seen them before. I think we have gotten through that. Many times he would get so fixated on cars he would just run right up to them in parking lots and want to touch them. I have taught him that we can look, but not touch. I am afraid a car alarm is going to go off! Also, he has run up to cars when people were sitting in them, and I think he scared them! LOL! My son started drawing the VW logo before he was 2 yrs old! My husband has a Jetta, so maybe this is where it started----

My son's other special interest is churches. I guess we have been taking him to church since he was an infant, so maybe this is where this stems from? Anyway, every time we pass a church, he wants to know the name of it. He remembers them all, and talks about and draws churches alot! We are Catholic, and it sort of cracks us up because he really talks about this one Methodist church near my MIL's house, and he says that he is going to get married in the Methodist church! LOL!

I would agree about the being able to classify them. Our little guy is also into boat motors. We have a boat so that is how it started. But when we go to the marina we have to look at every boat and discuss the horse power of each motor!! ! Our son also likes to touch the cars. He likes to specifically touch the front of the cars and explain where the motor is located. I have stopped him form trying to crawl under them or around the wheel well in hopes of getting a glimpse of it!! !! ! Now we just check out car fixing guides from the library and he studies those. ;)
