If I sing silly songs she likes it. Sometimes instead of reading a book out loud "normally", she will sing it to a melody. I told her to stop it, how was she going to remember what she read if she's singing it? She insisted that it helped to remember certain things if she sings them. Mmmkay, I will take her word for that one.

One time, when she was 4 or 5, I attempted to actually sing to her. Mind you, I can't carry a tune in a bucket, but I figured she wouldn't care being a little kid and all. She listened for a minute or two and then cut me off with a "That's okay, mommy. You don't have to sing." She patted my hand and then went on about her business as I sat stunned on the bed for a few seconds before laughing at myself.

My husband read three of the "Harry Potter" books to me while I was pregnant, and they're my son's absolute favorite read alouds. They're on their second go through the entire series right now. :D

Dont know what it is.......but my little fella 5yrs hates me to sing ! ! If I say so myself, I am not a bad singer ! !

Even in pre school, when they sang the 'welcome' song, he went mad ! !. He has only just found his voice in the last couple of years, and this is one way to get plenty of languge from him ie: "shut up Mommoy, please stop, go away, stop singing" etc etc. etc.

Not sure why, but he doesnt really like it. But then sometimes out of the blue, he will turn the radio up really loud, and grab his torch from his bedroom..... and have a 'disco' ! !! :P So he doesnt mind loud music.......I think when he is in the mood ! !!

So different from all the kids in his ASD preschool, he hates routine, hates the same old songs, and hates to know whats coming next ! !! I think he gets bored from the same songs :?

Music is definitely a great way to go. I've been a singer all my life, so its huge for me. When I'm prepping for a concert I sing it all the time at home and the kids start to 'know' it (whether they want to or not!) In our house we use singing as a means of joking around with one another (making up words to suit the occasion, like you're doing.) But even better, I have a few lullabies that I've sung to the kids since Day 1...they have special meaning for all of us!

But on a more general note - music can reach places in the brain and can even be used successfully to unlock language (in people with all sorts of neurological problems). There is a great book out there called Musicophelia by Oliver Sacks which talks about this, and many other aspects of the power of music on humans.

Keep singing!

I've been 'singing' some of James' books to him at bedtime, its much more effective than reading them, he really likes it.

My wife made up little songs using the phone number as the lyrics - it worked fantastically well and we had all of the kids (even the 3-yr old NT at the time) able to recite the phone number within minutes.

It never happened but I had visions of one of the kids getting lost and singing the phone number to a policeman. :)
