I still think putting a hormone band on the cats is a cheaper idea. The cats get more social because of it!

My cats don't misbehave, they just don't like to be cuddled.. they don't fight it, but they don't appreciate it. Boadi will come to you and sit on you and lick you, but if she isn't dictating the interaction, she wants nothing to do with it. Niko is timid to the point of paralyzing fear. If you pick him up, he doesn't move. He plays dead until you are done with him. I don't know why he's like that. I got him from a friend when he was a kitten. I know he hasn't been abused, and he was friendlier when he was younger but he's almost 2 years old now and just prefers to be left alone.

Sorry, but scrap that rabbit idea. I just did a search. They don't like to be held. They also need to be trained to use a litter box. Too much of a pain, in my opinion. I should have researched it before I sent it your way.

No dog? I lived in an apartment on the 4th floor in your general region and I had a labrador. Best dog ever. Why no dog in an apartment? Afraid to go outside with the dog? :P I don't know if you can still get companion animal permissions for disabled people there, that's how I managed to have a dog in a 4th floor apartment.

I probably could.. our manager is great.. we're technically not supposed to have cats.. but she thinks it's a stupid rule. She lets some of the little old ladies have pocket dogs. I'm not a big fan of pocket dogs.. I'd love to get my son a golden retriever.... but even if she let us, we don't have the space.

That's a miniature pinscher. They are awesome. Chinese cresteds are also ridiculously ugly/cute and their adorably ugly hair tufts can be coloured to suit the season or match your house decor!

I say a Rat. They are said to be human's best friend after dogs. They can be tamed and taught as well too. Will love to cuddle up if you cuddled it as it grew.
I loved my old pet ret. ;-;
No, you do not Kevlar gloves to handle a rat. They are not big mice; whom are scared all their lives. It really will learn to love you.

Follow this rule when choosing a pet rat:

Quote:
Try to avoid rats that are panicky when handled, especially if they do not relax quickly, and also those that are overly quiet and calm (may be ill). Often a good choice is a rat that is curious enough to approach you.

How cute is this guy!

I've had lots of rats.. I love them.. but I've developed an allergy to the protein in their urine... so now I break out in hives whenever I handle them.

hmm, pets, I do pets in a big way lol (we have chickens, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, cats and fish :p). My 10yr old has a hamster, and she loves the little critter :D She has managed to tame it very well, and as they dont like to be held for long periods, the 10-15 mis for your son would be good. You can also get some wonderful cages for them nowadays, space ships and such like! Guinea pigs are good, but they do need quite a large cage indoors, and plenty of social interaction. Rabbits can make excellent housepets but you need to make sure all wires etc are well out of reach or you can suddenly find yourself without tv or phone  I'm also allergic to rats, have kept them for years but currently don't have any, I just take a daily antihistamine and that works fine :) (and I think rats make excellent pets). We've also had ferrets, not a pet I would recommend for young children as they can be nippy when young and could really hurt a child. My daughter also has a small fish tank in her bedroom which is very calming and she can sit for hours watching them.
Just had a thought, what about a degu? Similar to a rat in size, but you may find that you don't have the allergy. Very intelligent little critters, although they should be in pairs I believe.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful pet ideas.
Between limited space, fear of safety from the cats.... I finally opted for fish for now. I know he wanted a buddy.. but I thought this was a decent place to start for our situation.. and he will just have to learn how to properly approach our timid, shy kitties if he wants a snuggle.

I went and got the tank all the decorations while he was at school and surprised him with it. He was super excited! (I was so afraid he would be disappointed.) We set it up together and got it going so we could get fish the next day... Today, he came home to 3 Platys and 4 glowfish. Nice bright colors, and the platys give live birth, so that can be surprising and fun when that comes around.. plus, maybe he can gift his friends with offspring.

Anyways, thanks for all the help.. maybe someday I will get out of this damn apartment and get him a dog, and a hedgehog, and a bunny, and have a little petting zoo of our own.

Until then, fish will do.

I want to get my son a low maintenance pet. We live in an apartment, so no dog. We have two cats.. which he loves but he gets frustrated that though nice, our cats are antisocial. He expects to be able to cuddle them, but they aren't so into it.

He does have a short attention span, so I'm thinking maybe not mammal.

I've been thinking for a long time about a turtle... but am concerned about salmonella, needs, etc.... I don't really know much about turtles needs, or specific species. Which might be a good kids pet, or not so much..

Ohhhh he's afraid of snakes and big or quick lizards.... I'm phobic when it comes to skinks...
And I'm allergic to rats, unfortunately.. I love them!

So... that said... any ideas?

Cats actually are among the lowest maintenance pets you will find, and as far as being cuddled, most animals do not like to be cuddled so I would forget about that.

Turtles actually live many years, generally smell, and need their cages cleaned a lot.

Most of these "low maintenance" pets actually have fairly long life spans on the order of many years, or even decades. They just die prematurely because of improper care because they aren't actually low maintenance.
