I personally don't have any problems with eye contact. I actually probably give too much eye contact because of not reading people's cues.

Actually, this is a common problem with eye contact in people on the spectrum.

Yes, he makes eye contact, but it took years for this to happen. And then one day...it just happened. It's like a part of his brain just clicked. Sometimes when he's really excited I might have to prompt him, but other than that, it's pretty good. I just want to encourage parents to be patient. Also, there are many other skills that are important in a social setting. Sometimes I think almost too much emphasis is placed on eye contact. I'm not saying it's not important, just saying...we should work on other social skills as well.

That's all! I enjoy this conversation.

My son has pretty good eye contact at home, unless he is preoccupied with something. It isn't as good at school, but he does do it some. Mostly, he seems to lose it when he is stressed, agitated or on sensory overload.

With my son, it seems to depend on how familiar and comfortable he is with the person. If he doesn't know someone he will usually not give eye contact. Interestingly though, if he is talking to me I have to give him eye contact otherwise he shouts at me and tells me I am not listening - I guess he is just practising what is preached to him ;)
