Growing up i risky.
I pretty much was allowed to do what I wanted when I was a child. I try to do the same to my own children.

I have only removed very valued objects when the children were small (four boys)
They get to help cutting things whenever they are interested
They have always been allowed to jump down from whatever they felt like - never hurt them seriously
They have all crawled on stairs from before they could walk, they have all fallen down some stairs - and learned from that
I have never had any special security equipment in my house (The only exception being dangerous things they could fall into like garden ponds (they are covered) or ovens/fireplaces)
I am not always good at putting away stuff, that teaches them to look where they walk
The oldest learned to walk in the rainforest where I was doing fieldwork and I camped with him for three months (a couple of weeks on end)
If they handle the cat wrong, it will bite or scratch them - a valuable lesson

I do keep them from chewing/biting plastic stuff (due to phthalates) they are not allowed to have television/computers in their rooms (due to Brominated flame retardant), No smoking in the house, no poisons in the garden etc. I would like them to be able to reproduce if they want to.
