Interesting. My son isn't diagnosed yet, but I will say that he has great days when he's sick.

My son had his first non-frustrating experience with handwriting on a day when he was home sick with a fever. He maintained a low temp for a few days but didn't have any other symptoms so he mostly just hung out on the couch snoozing and playing when he was awake. His play was calm the whole time and he didn't seem to be very sensitive to sensory input. It was bizarre and it never happened again but it was like he'd had all the hyperactivity and impulse control problems removed and he was just himself.

One of the most amazing discoveries recently about fevers is that they are not caused by the infection, but are in fact part of the body's defense mechanism against an infection. When a virus or other infection occurs, it needs specific conditions to sustain itself. The body upsets that condition by changing it's internal temperature so that conditions are not hospitable for the virus.

Now how that compares to what you all are experiencing in your kids I'm not sure of, but I imagine it may have something to do with the way the body raises it's temperature. It's done through increasing metabolism, and enlarging blood vessels, and then shutting down cooling mechanisms.

Have you ever read how its thought fever reducing meds like Tylenol, Aspirin and Ibuprofen have actually contributed to the severity of flu epidemics and helped the flu viruses to get stronger? The idea being that the med lowers the body's temp and makes it less able to fight off the infection.

That kinda goes along with how my mom used to bundle me up in tons of blankets when I had a fever until I broke a sweat. She learned that from my greatgrandmother and that's how they fought off infections by helping the body to fight the invader.

old russian folk lore believed that a daily dousing in frigid waters was an all cure, raising the body's temp quickly to fight bacteria.

I personally am against making others feel ill so others can deal with the ways they are different then them. I believe their are long term damages regarding this philosophy. But whatever gets you through your day.

Supposedly the Navajo lay naked in the snow to strengthen their immune system. I know a lot of Navajo though and none of them have volunteered the information that they do this themselves. However, every time my hot water goes out I tell myself I am strengthening my immune system by bathing in frigid water so it helps me mentally tolerate the discomfort.

Very interesting news all!

I am an Aspie, and my average body temperature is 96.8 [sic]. I have such a resistance to the influence of the cold as to be called 'cryophilic'. (I wear sandals, year round)

However hot weather will make me feel exhausted and extremely uncomfortable. This begins at exactly 73 degrees farenhiet, so I am much more sensitive to the heat then the average person.

Having a high fever (>=102) will make me simply withdraw.

I have a noteworthy counter example - I have only ever been to a sauna once, and turned the temperature to a dangerously high level (I was young, stupid, and angry). I stayed in there for 50 minutes and felt completly invigorated by my experience.
