Yeah, I probably am pretty blind...

The comic was interesting.

So, leggings aren't supposed to be worn? Why do they sell them then? What about kids?

Let me try a different angle, what *should* a 5-year-old girl wear? Or, what are many acceptable options?

I'm going to google streetwalker. I would think she was dressed okay, because so much of her was covered.

...and no one has been mean to me about it (or, I didn't notice...I'm good at that ;)). The comments were more like, "I love you, but you should know..."

My daughter is NT. I posted here because of *my* diagnosis.

My daughter doesn't wear her clothes to attract boys. She just puts things on that she likes. She definitely thinks more "princess" than anything else.

An example of clothing that has bothered someone:

pink tights with hearts
White biker shorts on top
T-shirt
Elsa heels

That get-up does sound a little like something a streetwalker would wear, LOL. Unless you have a special interest in the connotations of fashion, you might always be somewhat blind to this issue. I've always liked this comic about the ridiculous "fine lines" between what clothing is considered appropriate: http://www.viruscomix.com/page551.html

You can make a point out of saying your daughter is being allowed to develop her own fashion sense and make her own choices to anyone who tries to shame you in the future.

I can't really picture a full grown 'streetwalker' wearing that outfit....though not entirely sure what white biker shorts are, but pink actual tights with hearts? I'd think the sort of streetwalker you mean would likely have fishnets if any tights and a very exposing top shaped to be extra 'sexy' not a t-shirt with shorts and tights.

How does a 5 year old dress trashy? Or are you dressing her in miniature sexy underwear to walk about in? I just don't see it....I think whoever said that is the one with the issue to call a little 5 year old girl trashy.

That's what I think!

No, her shorts cover her bottom. Her swimsuit is a two piece, but the top is a shirt and it meets the bottoms. And she only wears it to swim or play in sprinklers.

I feel like she's covered pretty well.

Bike shorts.

I will admit, once her panties were hanging out of the bottom of the bike shorts. Since then, I told her she couldn't *just* wear bike shorts.

...which was probably why she was wearing the tights...

This is the problem with having a mom who's completely clueless about this stuff. :)

Yeah then I don't really get it...hell even if she did just have a regular 2 piece swim suit I wouldn't see the issue. I mean seems like the problem is more in the mind of the person who says something like that....why are they looking at a young girl that way to begin with is more my question.

Oh those....those are like the shorts I used to wear under dresses or skirts when it was too warm for tights, I could see wearing just those with a t- shirt being a little too exposing maybe but those with tights shouldn't really be a problem. And I noticed leggings where brought up in this thread....I don't see whats bad about those either unless they are worn with a shirt that's too short.

What's too short for a shirt with leggings?

Maybe I can find some pictures of her and crop her head out and you guys tell me what appropriate, what isn't, and how to fix it.

I seriously need some basics.

They're sold to be worn under dresses and skirts, or with long tunics or sweaters that cover your butt. However, if they have pockets on them (even fake ones!) you can get away with wearing them as pants. That's what the comic was making fun of in that panel. :)

Oh, yeah...she totally just wears them with shirts.

I've got some pictures uploading now. I couldn't find any at all where she wasn't wearing a dress...

Tell me which of these are good or bad...

I am very poor at fashion but how I think of it for my kids is the amount they're uncovered should correspond to what's functional, so the first dress in very hot weather looked pretty ok though long for hot, the white dress with fluff maybe for play, but she's little so ok. The violin playing photos seem really sweet. The only one I wouldn't have wanted my kids in by school age is the picture with spaghetti straps and what look like heavy stockings, because to me if it's warm enough for spaghetti straps tights are out, and if it's cool enough for tights, spaghetti straps are just uncovering to uncover.....thing is, sometimes NT kids have sensory issues and if she didn't like things on her arms I think I'd go along with her until she could tolerate comfortably.

Do you live in a very conservative area?

I guess it is a pretty conservative area. Bible Belt...

Maybe I should pay attention to what other kids wear.

You said she's NT, she might just choose to dress like other kids if you think that would be easier for her by putting some similar clothes in her closet. Easy time would be shopping for new school clothes, maybe go with someone. Women seem to like to help other women with no fashion sense. I think it's easier to fit in than not, unless one needs to not.

That's a good idea. I'll have to think of who to ask.
