Doctor visit not what I hoped for.........now what?

I would pull the 16 year old out. See what you can do in your state with HS'ing. Of course, you will need his co operation with it. I would pull him out, see if you can get one correspondance course for him for now, and just let him do whatever he wants for a good 6 months to decompress. Talk a lot about what he wants in his future, and make a plan to get there.

The software pusher I am, is going to recommend "inspiration" again. It is a great visual mapping tool, that could help your son map out his days, his plans for his future, and eventually when he is back up to it, homework assignments. The best news is, this software is only 69-89 dollars USD, so it is relatively affordable! My husband was blown away by it yesterday and told me he wants it for work and they should make a "professional" version!
