New here- not even sure why I'm writing this
Thanks for the tips Jason. I'm BRAND new at this. We just got his diagnosis a few weeks ago. Before that we really had no idea what was going on, or why. I've been watching a lot of videos from the Asperger Experts. Your advice sounds similar to what they recommend. When my son finds some common ground with other kids, his "shyness" goes away. It's so fun to watch. Social skills later, they will fall into place. I read that lastnight.

Im so glad you posted!
Firstly, its important to note that a school district diagnosis of autism is based on their criteria it is no way shape or form a medical diagnosis and it will not serve as such anywhere else other than a school district.
Secondly, I totally agree with everyone saying dont skip a grade. School is much more than academics and he needs to be with same age peers if you want him to develop social skills.
Finally (and this is my big news!) google the term twice exceptional. My son is 9 and we were only just told that he is twice exceptional after the most awful couple of years since 1st grade. He has autism but also a crazy high iq, he just tested up to the 12th grade level in language arts. These kiddoes need a very different learning experience to keep them engaged. Gate is not neccessarily the answer as that can just be more work and also for many twice exceptional kids their skills are scattered so although high in some areas they can have deficits in others.
I dont know if your child is but I would certainly add it to the reading list. Its the one thing that I think would've really made a difference for us instead of the frustration and behaviour escalation plus school phobia that we are dealing with now.
Best wishes to you x
