we've been thrown out of special school!
finding the right placement isn't always that easy. sometimes you have to make a compromise, so that the majority of your child's issues are addressed. for instance~ I have had students who have ended up in classrooms where the academics were lower than the student needed, but because of MAJOR behavioral issues they thrived in the very structured environment.
whereas it's possible that behavioral issues are caused by boredom, it's also possible that they are caused by other reasons.....I've also had students whose behaviors have reduced greatly by being put in a more challenging environment. it's not an easy answer. alot will depend on what the most important issues are for your son , and why he's having those issues.
is he articulate enough to help you figure out why he has certain behaviors ?.....have you tried filling out anecdotal behavioral reports yourself ? .............a behavioral report generally follows the ABC pattern. A= antecedent~ what happened before the behavior ( ie; turned off the tv, really loud noises etc) , B= behavior~ exactly what happened written in a sequential order, and includes environmental cues & possibly interaction with others as possible clues, C= consequence~ what happened as a consequence of this. By keeping track of what happens & why, you might have a better hold on what exactly is the best route to take with your son. good luck !
Good luck!
You are strong and will make the correct choice.
Remember what Mark Twain said:
"In the first place, God made idiots. That was for practice. Then he made school boards."

LOL
The teacher working with him at home introduced us to behavioural reports, and FINALLY we have a chance of seeing some of the patterns behind his behavior. He often doesn't understand his own reactions, and therefore can't explain unless they are very sensory and non-abstract: traffic noise, bad smell ect.
The ADHD/ritalin issue is huge - properly medicated he manages MUCH more without melting down. Sometimes there seems to be no apparent reason. The other issues are classic, for example activity changes without proper, and detailed preparation, demands i.e. school work where he doesn't decide what pages/books/sums, or consequences (if you don't do your school work you can't play with your friend...) being afraid of going out because of traffic noise. These things can be worked on, and probably another school, with kids who are less well functioning, would be more skilled at working with these issues.
I am so pleased to hear that things work out in the end and that your son is doing well celticgodess - hope I am where you are a year from now! Also, I'm kind of happy to hear my kid isn't the only "little devil" out there!
