To answer you "What would you have done?", probably gotten arrested for assault and battery. Your approach was was very appropriate and much more reasonable. That's what I have Cor for.
Just a thought, you might keep an eye on how the aide behaves towards other children, document and keep records. Sounds as if he should not be allowed to work with children period.
