IEP, Teacher Woes & Other Questions.
Hi Pandora,
In my case it wouldn't work. You see according to them, this behavior is only shown at home, so it's not a "School" problem. And if it's not a school problem, they don't seem to think they have to help him.
I also have had a problem getting him to school. It started last year and it was bad. His rages were happening almost every night and morning. This was before I put him on Risperadol. But his rages kept him from school. We would pull up in school and all of a sudden chris would freak out and refuse to get out of the car. I would get the principle to help me, the office lady and even his teacher, and there was no way he was getting out of the car. He would cry, curl himself up in a ball, and if it was monday he would repeat, "It's monday, everythings changed" over and over again. This year is better than last year, and I think it's more because he has a better teacher (the one last year was a Biotch) plus the Risperadol helps to calm him, but last year he missed the last 2 + months of school because of this. We were even Sarbed (turned in for Truancy).
BUT according to them, it's a home thing, not a school thing. UGH
This year, his attendance is better but we have certainly had our moments. One day he wouldn't go to school because the day before the teacher moved his desk without warning and the sound of the overhead projector hurt his ears. Some mornings when he refuses to go I just keep him home for a few hours and manage to calm him down and finally get him there, so it's better, but he is still missing school. He also trys to come home weekly by saying he threw up in the bathroom and goes to the nurses office. He's fine, he is just trying to find away to not stay there.
So, I only wish that would work. But it won't.
The school people are being incredibly slack by saying the behaviour issues are a home problem. It is typical, especially of the the very high functioning children, that they somehow hold themselves together at school but then when the pressure is off at home they let off a lot of anger.
I know, because I was like this myself and have also spoken to parents of aspie children in real life.
