I hear there's a new drug called Placebo that works great! No side effects either!

DLJunkie, did your son take regular Adderall first? And did he have some negative responses to it, such as a bad crash when the med withdraws from his system?

I guess I'm just nervous because my son hasn't had any adverse reactions to these medications before -- no lack of eating, no bad side effects -- until this one. He's obviously been very depressed, but only at 2:15 to 3:00 p.m. (last period of the day) everyday that he takes the med (weekdays).

Adderall XR has never done that. He has a prescription for a small dose in the afternoon - We never use it.

My son was misdiagnosed with bipolar initially, and took just about everything imaginable. I look back at all the medications I gave him, and it makes me feel sick. He tried Lithium, Depakote, Abilify, Buspar, Adderall, Staterra, Ritalin, Concerta, and Cogentin (for side effects). I honestly feel like none of them helped. They appeared to initially, then the behavior would get worse and we just kept adding things..It's a slipery slope. He is currently not taking anything and we are having to consider the use of an antidepressant. That is very scary to me, but so is depression and it's consequences. I would just use a word of caution and say, if you haven't given behavior modification a real try - I would try that first. :?

Sounds like good advice! Though every time we forget his meds the school calls & asks if we forgot!

Well, we're going into the second week of no meds. After emailing teachers to see how last week went, I now know that it didn't go very well -- teachers were having a horrible time getting my son to initiate any kind of work at all. One teacher commented that she had to sit right next to him, prompting him the whole time, to get him to do his work.

I tried calling the doctor to see about getting a script for Adderall XR, but the doc is out until a week from now.

I'm guessing that I should try driving my son to school this week, give him the Adderall just before he jumps out of the car, and that way he won't have the nosedive from the medication (hopefully) until he gets home.

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed.
