What am I doing wrong?

It does rather depend on when they have to wake up, however, doesn't it? But, overall, I think ASD kids need to be at least somewhat in sync with nature on the schedule.
Pop always woke up really early no matter what season, how dark it was or when he really needed to be up. He rarely sleeps in. I finally have him trained to come into our bed if he gets up after 2am and before 6am. Before 2am, he goes to his bed. After 6am, he can do what he wants (quietly). Now he gets up between 5:30am-6:30am.
I also cut down the time we spend getting ready for school. We only use the minimal amount of time (30 minutes) from making breakfast, getting dressed, brushing teeth to socks and shoes. This way there isn't time to argue over activities or stalling. He's allowed to play his Nintendo DS because he can pry himself away from it quickly. So, I make breakfast at 6:45, we're walking out the door at 7:15.
Another option if he's very young is an afternoon nap. When Pop was working so hard in Kindergarten, he'd take 2-3 hour naps afterschool. His night and morning routine stayed the same.

You can't blame yourself. I hear good things about melatonin, but have you also tried a weight blanket? It really relaxes the kid. When our kid runs around near bedtime like he's Speedy Gonzalez, it means he's punchy...on his last leg. He's senses are really taxed at the end of the day. My wife will give him a warm bath late at night if she needs to. That, some classical music and the blanket does the trick for us.
