I always ask my kids "Did you have a decent day?" If it's no, i will say. "Really, did something happen to make it bad?" If it's yes I ask, "Anything interesting happen today?" and if there is a no to that I just ask if he wants his snack.

I found that a question of "What did you do today at school?" gets an answer of "You should look in my bookbag..."

Oh and after I find out what happened to make it not decent I ask if everything was going okay before that happened, then we move on.

Whole conversation lasts about 30secs -1min. on average. (The conversation about what snack might be lasts probably 10 minutes...)

I usually say "Ok I guess...". If I am feeling horrible, I didn't care if it started out well, and vice versa. Last weekend, for example, I had a nice thing happen at the rental company, but does that negate the fact that I didn't get enough done, saw a pretty rude stupid person and another person all but threatened to deck me? NOPE!

Besides, the average person doesn't care.
