Just my opinion...but I wouldn't take her to another doctor until you see how the Prozac goes. Most of the specialists within autism are psychiatrists, some are psychologists, some pediatric neurologists, etc. The important thing is that they have experience with AS, OCD, etc. If they did a psychiatry residency and a child fellowship then they have been studying aspects of those disorders their entire professional lives. Additionally, there is always disagreement in the field about which psych disorders are genetically & neurologically related. I wonder if your MD said one can't have AS without some obsessive traits. He is mixing the way laymen refer to obsessions with the DSM-IV diagnoses of ASD, OCD, etc. He may not have been sufficiently precise in his use of language, but he may also have been trying to translate his "medicalese" into something he thought a parent could understand. He may not know how well informed you are. Just a thought..

Well, second visit to the psychiatrist. I told her the Prozac was having too many side effects so she switched my daughter to Zoloft. I have to wait a week to start it. I am going to tell the school next week. Things have just gotten to be too much for my daughter and they have to be able to understand why she is the way she is. I just wish she wasn't ashamed to be different. A boy called her a ret*d at school yesterday. Thank goodness for the holiday weekend coming up.
