Argh yes happy meal toys! We have loads of them, they break, loose bits or are just generally rubbish and dont do anything, but they have to be kept. Also they are different every week so DD5 wants to collect each one, but we only go every few months as a treat so thats impossible.

Last time we were at McDonalds we had a load of toys given us by older kids that wanted the happy meal but didnt want the toy so thought that we might want them as we had younger kids....

Well...when I was a kid I used to save not only the toys, but also the BOXES! No, I am not kidding.
I'd forgotten all about them but last year found them in my parents' garage. I made a couple of hundred bucks selling them on eBay, but these were all "vintage 70's and 80's." Found a few of the toys (in those days it was stuff like Ronald McDonald erasers) and sold those too.

Not sure if the newer stuff has much collector value...I always see boxes full of Happy Meal toys at flea markets. It probably depends on what they are.

When my kids get them we keep them for a while but when they break we throw them out. Kids don't care...my son with ASD doesn't play with toys much (if at all) anyway.

The modern ones are collectible but not worth much, theres lots on ebay. I think people are collecting for the future, knowing they will be worth something one day :)

Momsparky, I mean no criticism of what might work for you, but I need to disagree with with offering a food item, in some sort of exchange like you described.

You misunderstood: Happy Meals and their ilk are a HUGE source of free but unwanted, nearly unusable toys that tend to exacerbate toy "collecting."

I was suggesting that rules need to be set up beforehand for these kinds of toys that come as a "premium" with something like a meal, NOT that the toy be exchanged for food, which I agree is a very bad idea. I apologize if that was not clear.

 Oh, I did misread your post. I do this often (though worse IRL). I'm sorry for that and the consequent tangent from OP's topic.

WHY THE HELL DOES A SECOND GRADER NEED AN IPOD?

Anyway..

I've been sleeping with the same cuddle buddy since I was two. I hesitate to call him a "toy" because he's very real to me. He's the only family I have, and I will never EVER get rid of him.

I feel the same way about my favorite plush friends. :D I'll never get rid of them either, nor will I allow anyone else to.
