Taking a hard line...
Thank you so much for sharing this. His response to your conversation was very inspiring. I only hope my son can handle mistakes so maturely when he is your son's age.

blarneystone, I would also put your son into rage management as well.
I did some dumb things when I was 18. I hung out with minors and should not have. I could have gotten myself into real major problems and I didn't even know it. I read a number of laws online including the one on statutory rape and child molestation. I thought child molestation was more narrow than it actually is. An 18 year old who has sex with a 15 year old can be considered a child molester. I did not know this until I went and looked up the laws. I researched it in depth. After I read this I did a complete 180 degree turn.
Boy, I was surprised. When I thought of a child molester I think of a 40-50 year old man with a 6 - 9 child. My misconception came from TV and movies. TV and movies are nothing like how our society in America works.
Your children may know about certain laws but may misunderstand its application. Another thing is this. Ignorance of the law is no excuse either. This is another thing I didn't know. Blarneystone, your child may not know some of these things and you need to make sure you tell him in direct terms and show him the actual law.
When I father a child I will be proactive with this and explain these laws to him in complete detail and what the consequences are for breaking them. For child molestation, it is a minimum 10 year sentence.
