I live on the NYC/Long Island area, does anyone know of any good future colleges for her to get into this field -- I would need a college that would be open and helpful to a high functioning aspergers girl

This will depend on many things, just as any college application does - plus the added issues of the ASD. You need to figure out whether you're looking for a fine arts program or a more academic program; what kind of program she'd be looking for in terms of residential vs. commuter, two year vs. four year; urban vs. suburban vs. rural. You need to see how her academic record is (grades, SAT's, etc) and her extra-curricular "credentials." Then, depending on how old she is, there could be options for her that don't exist now. Many schools are just starting to explore and develop supports for students on the autism spectrum. That means that in two or three years, a school without supports today could have supports in place. I would recommend looking at schools you think might otherwise be appropriate, and then finding out what supports they have or are pursuing. I happened to discover that a university near me is starting to write grant proposals for such supports now. Since there is no guarantee that they will get funding, I will not post the name of the university, but I am sure there are many similarly situated schools.

There are many excellent Graphic Arts Colleges in Upstate New York and they are certainly less expensive than those colleges
and universities in NYC and Long Island. Is your daughter able to experience college living away from home?

One particular college that has a great Graphic Arts Major is Mohawk Valley Community College. It is an excellent two year college, one of the top ten community colleges in the USA. Right next door to the college is the Kelberman Center for Autism
which is an excellent facility providing services to kids and adults with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Mohawk Valley Community College is so close to the Kelberman Center that your daughter can easy walk out her dorm room and access any
special assistance she needs. The college, itself, also, has excellent services for students with disabilities. Check out the website for Mohawk Valley Community College if you wish to learn more. The web address is...www.mvcc.edu

Many students from NYC and Long Island attend Mohawk Valley Community College, about a six hour drive from NYC. After graduation, many students in the Graphic Arts Major transfer to Rochester Institute of Technology, which is private and much
more expensive. It saves a great deal of money by going to Mohawk Valley Community College first.

I know many students who are now living and working in NYC as Graphic Artists after having gone to Mohawk Valley Community College for their first two years and then, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).

If your daughter is interested in Graphic Arts, do NOT have her major in Fine Arts. They are two entirely different majors. I know
because I have a niece who attends the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), a very difficult and highly competitive school to
gain acceptance.

Mohawk Valley Community College is an excellent college for beginning freshmen...thousands of students from NYC already know.

Does your daughter want to do graphic design, or do YOU want her to do graphic design?

If you were in Alberta, I would have recommended Red Deer College.
