Question for parents about seafood

This is something that's been bothering me for a while now. People disregarded the potential for mercury as a cause of autism after the vaccine scandal, but nobody ever mentioned the fish. A lot of groups have been saying you shouldn't eat fish more than twice a month because of mercury accumulation as you go up the food chain. Even the FDA advises people to limit consumption.

It's just that I have Asperger's Syndrome, and I'm quite aware of my mother's seafood habits. She used to eat it all the time, until she had an allergic reaction after a pound of shrimp. I'm really curious about other parents here. Do any of you remember how much seafood was eaten around the time of pregnancy? Did you eat a lot of seafood, a little?

Mum didn't eat fish with me really, she's not a fish fan. She ate peppermint ice cream though.

To do a real test you need to ask mothers of non-autistic kids too, otherwise finding lots of seafood might just mean people like seefood.

Actually, I'm hugely oversimplifying, it takes huge amounts of knowledge to do a test properly.

There wasn't an option of "not at all". I have two kids. One's an aspie, one's NT and I didn't have seafood with either.

I did not eat fish at all -- mostly because I was worried about the mercury.

I did have a few bowls of clam chowder while about 4 months along during a vacation.

That was it.

I did not eat any seafood while pregnant. I'm not really a seafood person.

I'm a lot more concerned about all the fire retardant that my son must have chewed off his pajamas than anything I might have eaten during pregnancy, when it comes to potential environmental aggravations.

My father was AS, as well, and his family never ate seafood.

I had a bit of a thing for anchovy and black olive pizzas when I was pregnant, but I honestly don't think there is a connection. I believe that my husband is on the Spectrum, I am waiting to be assessed myself, and I can see many traits in my mother's side of the family.

Anchovies are such tiny fish -- mercury would not be an issue.

Mercury bioaccumulates in fat and is the worst in big long-lived animals ... like tuna, orange roughy, and mackerel.

ASU did a study on this, will try to find the link. We were in the coastal NW - lots of seafood.

I don't know how often she ate it when pregnant, but my mom's a huge fish fan. Especially salmon and black cod.

I kept a list on the frige of what I was and was not sposes to eat. So no large predory fish in my diet when was expecting but I did eat fresh water fish in limited amounts.

I have been allergic to fish from as far back as I can remember, so I know that when I was pregnant with baby J that none ever touched my lips.
