My 18-year-old is AS, he does not smack when he is eating. His brother, who is NT, does smack when he is eating. I've never called him a pig, but I do try to make him aware that it is unmannerly. Usually, he is completely unaware that he is smacking. I don't think anyone does it intentionally, and I don't think it has any real connection to being on the spectrum.

For us, the real challenge at the supper table is our safety. When our AS son was somewhere around 16, his appetite went through the roof! Now, he sucks in food at a prodigious rate. When my sister came to visit she reached for the mashed potatoes and almost lost a hand. I had to put a big decal on the table pointing to his sitting position that reads: CAUTION: JET INTAKE. STAY CLEAR.

Seriously though, I don't think smacking has anything to do with being on the spectrum.

both of my son's on and off the spectrum smack it is so gross they can do it with their mouths closed but not nearly as loud. But my odler son also gulps that is what truely makes me nuts. I only say things sometimes because I do not like to make dinner about that but they know they smack and at times try to curb it. My older son loves to gulp though. I try to make a rule that he can only gulp water but he should enjoy everything else.

I tend to smack and slurp while eating.

Got a problem with it? Try and find me, fools!

My autistic son does that too. It's not so bad when he eats with his mouth closed but he needs to be told to eat with his mouth closed.

I dont think anyone really intends to eat with their mouth open. I've always believed that NTs can eat with their mouth closed naturally. Maybe it's harder to aspies to neurogically and chew and keep the mouth closed at the same time.

It's been my problem at least.

I know I tried really hard as a child to chew with my closed and I was still getting crapped on for it even when I did grasp the concept...

apparently there's supposed to be a "proper way" to chew with your mouth closed.

There is something called a "reverse tongue thrust" which is basically an oral motor problem in which a person thrusts their tongue outwards when chewing, forcing the food out rather than sideways towards the cheeks. My daughter does this and I plan on talking to the OT at her school about it when I get the chance. If other aspies do it that would explain a tendancy to "smack"

Those kinds of sounds trigger really unpleasant sensory experiences for me. As far as I can tell, I'm a quiet eater.

When I was a toddler, after I ate I would brush my hands together to get all the crumbs off. Was a big deal to me. Smacking, in my mind = messy eating. Eeek. I am a sectional plate kind of girl. No food touching.

My AS son doesn't smack but he definitely eats more like an animal than a human being. Still, we would never, ever call him a pig. We try to make him aware of it gently, so that he will know to try to control it when in public, but it isn't like he is CHOOSING bad manners, he mostly isn't aware.

Your parents should not be calling you names. It helps nothing.

Hi. I have to ask this: what is smacking, in this context?
