I've been browsing youtube videos on autism and it makes me so sad that the moms who post cute videos of their autistic kids all have comments disabled. I completely understand why they feel the need to do it, I have had random strangers come to my blog and call my son a ret*d. But how sad not to be able to say, "how cute" or "that really moved me."

People can be very nasty.

I'm going to find it tremendously amusing when Medical Journals start publishing articles on how rudeness and bullying are a pathological mental illness caused by a neurological disorder, demonstrating that people who call others names like 'ret*d' are themselves neurologically ret*d.

The internet is unregulated and is therefore a troll magnet.

I think that people feel that they can say, whatever they want on the internet, because they can't see the person behind the screen, or their reactions. I still think that people can be quite nasty, though.

I don't think it's just the trolls they are avoiding. There is a lot of controversy about (a) putting kids into videos and (b) the methods some of the parents are advocating by doing so. I've watched many well meaning videos by parents only to end up completely upset by what I've seen. The children are always beautiful and innocent; it is actions of the parents - seen or implied - that might upset me.

I don't think there was anything controversial about most of these videos, unless you're just philosophically opposed to videotaping children. They were mostly just kids laughing or having fun, cute little moments you would film to show the relatives. They might be intended to make a bit of a statement about the fact that autistic kids do have fun, which I'd be hard pressed to find offensive.

Until then, I'll drink to it.

The internet is the last cowboy country where anything goes. A lot of people like to get a kick out of trolling a person's video, blog, etc. whether they actually have hateful intentions or not.

Maybe it's just a personal thing, but I'd never youtube a video of my kid. I have posted pictures on private websites where I can invite friends and family....but the general public? I guess then I wonder what is the motive behind posting a video....you can share privately with family. But then I'm a pretty private person.

That and it's a genetic abnormality that has been passed down from their parent/s...

(I used to think kids were cruel - until I met some of their parents...)
