Emotional Regulation Books
I need help for my 8-year-old AS son. Resources I already have (and can go back through):
Incredible 5 Point Scale
Nonviolent Communication
Respectful Parents Respectful Kids
Anyone have experience with any of these?
Zones of Regulation
Parenring a Child Who Has Intense Emotions
The Explosive Child
For background on my child, he can make very mature decisions when he is calm. However, he can stay suspended in mad/upset for hours. A lot of what I *do* know to help him relies on him using emotion words, which he says "embarrass" him...I need to help him move through that. (I've seen his best friend, another boy, use emotion words to tell another child how he hurt his feelings and why, so my son would be fitting into his peer group, not being separated from them by using these words.)

So you know who just said that:
I am female, I am married
I have two children (one AS and one NT)
I have been diagnosed with Aspergers and MERLD
I have significant chronic medical conditions as well
This is not a book, per se, but more of a reference. I have used some of the stuff with my daughter before and she likes it. In fact, she "taught" the concepts of "expected behaviors vs unexpected behaviors" to her peers in 1st grade! LOL!

Take another look at The Explosive Child (preferably one of the most recent editions), read Lost at School, and watch the videos at the LivesInTheBalance website. I found the podcasts in the Listening Library section to be very helpful as well. I truly believe the key to emotional regulation is to get good at identifying and solving the triggering problems -- solve the problem and there's no emotional reaction that needs regulating. As a bonus, the language used by that program has very little to do with "feelings". It's very rational and concrete, "I've noticed that you have difficulty with XYZ when... What's up? ... The thing is....Do you think there's a way that..."
