My son is learning how to skateboard and his protective gear -- elbows, knees, hands -- is really a pain to put on. But we really want him to wear the gear, especially since he's a little clumsier than the average kid. I hate to put up roadblocks for him, though. My husband thinks it doesn't get any easier, but I thought I'd look into it.

What about the pads are difficult? As I recall most of them are held on by velcro straps. And if that is the case then you really cant get much easier then velcro straps.

Although to be honest, you really don't need to worry too much about the elbow and knee pads. If your son lands on his joints then he is just gonna skin himself and be in a lot of pain, but nothing worse. But the wrist guards are a good idea because you can break your wrist pretty easily if you land on it wrong. Both my brother and grandma broke their wrist while rollerblading.

They have elastic, so they have to be pulled up his legs and arms and then velcroed.

You may be right, he skins his knees fairly regularly now doing other stuff.

Tonight he fell while skateboarding and landed on his butt and was crying that he wanted a pad for his butt too.

IMO if you do something where you are expected to take falls - learn how to fall properly.

yeah most protective gear is the elastic sleeve kind, can be hard to put on for kids. if you look around hard enough, you can find the kind that just velcros, like this one http://www.amazon.com/Alta-Swivel-Profe ... 41&sr=8-31 these are usually not sport ones, more work ones. but you can find at least knee ones if you look for protective gear for gardening, mechanics, etc.

the velcro only kind arent as secure, not as flexible either which can be an issue doing sports. but better than wearing nothing at all.

Im getting that image from that chucky cheese commercial where the kids are wrapped up in bubble wrap LOL! I always say that is the only thing that would protect my kids. We have helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist pads...they still manage to bleed from somewhere!

Thanks! What he has now is not very flexible either, so I don't think it'd make much difference. Though possibly he'd have an easier time with more flexible gear? Something to think about.
