Can they just ban the chelation BS as a treatment for anything besides maybe metal poisoning? I think I'd rather have them get witch doctors to dance around in front of fires to treat autism. At least that could be funny/visually stimulating.

When I leave the WP and go to other AS parenting sites, it amazes me how many people still believe chelation is THE answer, and the only reason it gets a bad rap is because of big pharma. These parents are committed, based on what they believe they saw right in front of their own eyes. I wish there was an easy way to answer that because, until we do, the FDA can issue all the warnings it wants and it won't make a dent in the practice.

Well I am glad that the FDA have issued this warning. I feel that in many ways it is overdue.

I am a chemist and I know how chelation treatment can in some genuine medical conditions be lifesaving, but for heart disease and autism is it worse than useless. It is something which can be very harmful to a person's health and wealth.

I think that witch doctors dancing around fire is unable to 'cure' autism but at least it will not harm the person. I think that it is important for medical doctors to firstly 'do not harm' !

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

Totally agree on all counts.

I think the biggest problem that a lot of parents have has to do with the grieving process being interrupted by charlatans. Someone will say "Hey - I can cure your child and make them normal" and parents get excited because they want their kids to be better.

Once people realize that the're no curing us and start working on helping kids with AS cope and work with their strengths/work around their weaknesses you'll see this less and less.
