Biologically he is 8. Emotionally, I would put him at maybe 6. Intellectually, not sure but quite high.

I think "mental age" is a very vague and difficult to answer question. What types of abilities are you talking about? As I suspect is common with many AS kids, my son's abilities of all sorts are all over the map. In some ways, he is more responsible than other kids his age. In others, he is less. He is less independent when it comes to self-care life skills, and less socially advanced, but way ahead in interest in and understanding of certain complex concepts. So, which ones are you looking to talk about?

My son is almost 5 biologically, and he seems to be at the 3 or 4 yr. mark mentally. It is hard to tell. Academically, he knows most things kids his age know, but socially and emotionally he is behind.

My son just turned eight.

He has the vocabulary of a 10 year old, and sometimes the sense of humour of an adult! :)

Emotionally, though he tries to act "tough", he seems to be about five.

Socially, as in interacting with his peers (minus the vocab), he is around four. He still engages in parallel play.

He is as sensitive as a pregnant woman, and can cry very easily if frustrated or insulted. Yet sometimes he has an emotional wall up, (when he has done something wrong) that cannot be penetrated by reason or empathy. (I think he does this to protect his sensitive feelings from criticism)

In his play, his likes and dislikes, he is about four. Hot wheels, trains, airplanes. No brand name requirements or latest tv show "fads". Which I love!!

I can safely expect him to take personal care of himself at around the level of a four/five year old. That is sometimes frustrating.

Many times, he says things that are so smart, and so wise, they flabbergast me into speechlessness.

And I am rarely speechless!

DS often surprises people with how self-aware he is, much beyond his 10 years. Same is true for his ability to conceptualize. However, when you look at his ability to handle strong emotion, he's like a very, very young child.

Somewhere between seven and seventy seven.

Seriously, he's young emotionally speaking... maybe ten. (He's chronologically fourteen.) Intellectually he's been scoring as an adult since he was in primary school, so I can't really give him a numerical age. His IQ is very high. But he's also very innocent, which makes him vulnerable to "street smart" savie kids who have "grown up" faster than he has.

Punkykat perhaps we could arrange a play date between you and my son

My son is 7. Intellectually I honestly have to put him in junior high. About 12. Socio-emotionally, about 5.

I don't know, socialy I could be even younger than your son. I'm not sure where I am socialy since I try to avoid any forms of it.

This can vary because he is a teen and likes teen stuff like games, music and the clothes but still is innocent and childlike. I think we have his IQ at 8.

It's not easy to understand... some abilities are "normal", others are different. His language is impaired, like he was a child aged 15/16 months, but he is 3.
His symbolic games are very poor. His memory is amazing. I'm 35 and my memory is not so good.
