My son is 4 and NV and pretty low functioning.
He's been making progress and I wanted to come and see, and so I saw him do some things I haven't seen before; He found his name tag and put it on the wall, he came to the mat when he was told it was mat time. He sat down through the session instead of getting up and leaving to be by himself. He held a girls hands and looked in her eyes with a grin. He watched what other children are doing, (that is the biggie I think!). When it was announced mat time was finished he jumped up to his feet. It means he is listening, he is watching, he is observing, whereas he used to look into the distance or at leaves on trees or focus on a straw in his hand. He doesn't do this things all the time and needs prompting but it's like the seeds of something is there.
I am more confident he will be able to go to school at 5 if he keeps progressing like this.

It was very emotional for me, I had to keep looking away and out the window pretending I was looking at interesting trees and fence pailings so I didn't blubber!

That is awesome. It is funny how the things most parents take for granted can just give us soooooo much joy! It is wonderful to see our children accomplish things that we didn't know they could do! Sounds like he is on the right track. Keep up the good work!

Reminds me of my son!
I too had to look away, had to hold back the tears.
I found it so interesting how well he listened and participated at school, completely different than he is at home, have you noticed that too?

Hi Jacksonsmom, yeah I'd agree to an extent, I guess at Kindy my son has lots of children his own age around, and also he has a one on one teacher aide who has been working with him for about a year, and they've been working on the same things and he has a routine. At home he's getting better, we're doing PECS and thats becoming his way to communicate, he's getting not too bad at that keeps bringing us pictures of ice cream and all the other favorite food items!

I would like to visit my daughter's kindergarten in the near future. I've been told by one of her teachers that she has become friends with a little boy (I get the impression he's also autistic). Who knows, maybe he'll be my future son-in-law! :D
