Sensory-friendly movies

A friend just mentioned that AMC offers special screenings of movies in theaters where the lights are turned up, the sound is turned down, and kids are invited to get up and dance if they want to: http://www.amctheatres.com/uploadedFile ... 122209.pdf

This scares me a little. What if they make it illegal to take an autistic child to a movie that isn't sensory friendly, even if the child doesn't have sensory issues? This probably won't happen, but I'm worried that it will. However, it is good for kids with sensory issues and is a great thing as long as they don't forcing autistic children to watch this type of movie.

Um, I don't think there is any danger of that...AMC did this to honor the request of a parent with autistic children, and is working with the Autism Society. It's very limited, but still nice of them to give it a try.

It's a great opportunity for us to try a movie where DS might be able to watch without earplugs, a hoodie sweatshirt and the hood of a heavy winter coat.

our theater does something like this on most weekends for any kids to go to. i have taken my daughter to it, she didn't like that people were allowed to get up and stuff during the movie but she liked that she could ask hundreds of questions without getting shushed. i think it's great, it's one more accomidation to make things better for the kids that need stuff like this.

In the case, it's a good idea for kids with sensory issues.

Personally, I'd shoot myself in these "Sensory" theaters.

Having people walk around...or I should say kids walking around, would annoy me more than the loud stuff. I'd want to burn down the theater or tie down every single one of the kids.

I thought the same as Pandora's when this started here where I live (in the country, not our area). We watch DVDs at home if we think it's going to be too much. This is one of those situations where I push my son to participate in the world. If we're not ready to sit still in a movie theatre and be quiet and respectful, that's ok, we can wait and watch a film at home when it comes out on DVD.

What I would like are sensory friendly shopping centre hours where nobody is allowed to talk over loudspeakers, stand in the middle of the aisles chatting with their neighbours or bump into me because I don't exist. A girl can dream.... :p
