My boyfriend's son is almost 8 years old and still does not wipe his butt after he poops. He is autistic. Any techniques, tricks, etc would be most helpful!

Why is your boyfriend not posting this?

How to address the situation depends on the individual child and how profound their difficulties are.

The bf isn't too computer savvy.. And the mom is pretty much absent in the son's life besides taking him to the beach once or twice a week.

His son doesn't have much difficulty. He can express himself most of the time. Doesn't talk in quite complete sentences, rather phrases. He's learned how to wash his hair/body by himself and is reaching all his goals in his IEP plan. I just feel bad because when his dad or I start his bath he usually has poop that we have to wipe between his butt before he gets in...

Social story? Hand over hand?

Not an uncommon problem for a little kid with ASD, I might add.

The only thing that worries me is that you say he "doesn't have much difficulty." You don't know how incredibly hard he might be working to appear how he does. It's like trying to compose a speech when you're coming out of anesthesia and you're not even sure you're human yet... trying to appear "normal" under sensory overload.

I was thinking hand over hand.. I've only been with his dad for 2 months so still a newbie to this world.. Learning and reading. He has yet to go to an initial behavioral therapy appointment so on the "spectrum" I'm not even sure where he is at.. From what I've read and observed of his son he's doing amazing to me. I'm just trying to be proactive!
