My daughters doc has suggested that we try this. My daughter was diagnosed with Aspergers, ADHD (combined type), and anxiety issues. She is doing ok now and I am not sure if I should try it. She was very anxious last school year and also had trouble sometimes focusing in class. I really feel that had to do with the teacher as she yelled a lot. I really don't see her behaivor as an issue as far as acting out. I also heard that the beginning of the school year is sometimes referred as the honeymoon period and am worried it may get bad again. My daughter was a mess last year. She really had a hard time. I am hoping this year is better. She would make herself sick about going to school. Her doc said it would help her to focus better and also help with anxiety. Has anyone seen good results with this drug? I have also looked into changing diets but my daughter already has such a limited diet as it is and she really does not like many foods so I think this may be a problem for her. I did observe her in class and she seems to have a hard time getting organized and it also seems to take her longer then the other kids to do things. Her grades did go down last year also. She has always got good grades so this was kind of upsetting for both of us. My daughter is in the 4th grade if that makes a difference. I am so glad this forum is here. I would be grateful for any responses.

Thanks

My thoughts are Strattera is a noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor NRI. A cheaper off
patent drug generic Wellbutrin SR is a noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor.

My guess it might help inattention but not hyperactivity a seperate non-stimulant drug
like guanfacine can control hyperactivity.

I have read of an adult taking a low dose of Wellbutrin SR and guanfacine for combine
type ADHD with good results.

no experience with strattera nor adhd....but do have experience with wellbutrin. son takes wellbutrin now, and , although i can't say he's more organized...his anxiety level has decreased tremendously.
not every drug works for everyone. as she *is* struggling, i'd suggest giving the med a try and see how she does. as i don't know much about this drug, is it one of those drugs that you should see somewhat of an instantaneous result ? i know with depakote, son had to get to a "therapeutic level" before we'd see any results ( hated depakote btw)

How old is your son that is taking wellbutrin? A thought that popped into my head after
I posted was I bet there are studies on young kids and strattera and not wellbutrin which
might be one reason the doctor suggested strattera. And wellbutrin has a bad rap as
increasing risk of seiseures (spelled great hahaahah), which on closer look its been
over estimate compared to other anti-depressants and the new SR and XL forumlas even less likely.

Anna; You mention your daughter works slower and is less organized than her classmates. These are common with children with AS - EFD or executive functioning disorder is a very common comorbid as is the slower processing which leads to slower working speed.

None of this means she is any less capable than her classmates.

If she has a teacher that yells, NT/AS or otherwise, my kid would be *outta there*! !

Our son isn't currently on medication, but we have exhausted ourselves working with him over the past couple of years.

Good luck.
