I did a presentation for some reps from the board of ed and it could not have gone any better. The meeting was fabulous! Now that they have the dx on paper, I'm being offered a lot of great services.

DS (age 7) is being placed is one of the best aspergers programs in the district. An Aspergers class in the public school that does not only academics but life skills, social skills, his teacher has a ton of experience with Aspies and he only has 7 classmates. When they read his SR (student record) they said "We want him! He'll be a great fit!" which is not something I'm used to hearing. We always hear "he has too many needs, too many issues, he needs to much support" But this school is really proactive and they do a lot of inclusion with the mainstream classes when the student is ready.

I was sleuthing around and heard that other parents of aspies said that's the school to be at, that the mainstream kids are very protecting and supportive of the aspie kid and for the most part, really look out for them.

So DS is very excited about moving to the new school. he hasn't been back to school at all this year because they didn't have a placement.

We're trying to get him in asap because the longer he's home, the higher his anxiety is. The Autism Team is going to help him transistion from home to school which will be a huge help!

I posted the long version of the update in my blog http://mylittlecanadiancorner.blogspot.com/

Here's to a step in the right direction!

WOOHOO! Now thats what I am talking about!! I think everyplace should have services like what you have described. How great for you and your son. I have a good feeling that he will start to really flourish in this new school. You must be so relieved as a Mom to know that your son will finally be understood and getting the help that he needs. Keep us posted on how he is doing.

Katherine :)

I know. Imagine that eh? DS had his tour of the school on Friday and LOVED it. His teacher is amazing. He has a Psych degree and did behaviour mod with autistic kids before putting his ECE degree to good use in the school system.

One thing I find so incredibly refreshing is that he gets that AS is a communicative disorder, not a behavioural disorder. He has such a positive outlook and he truly LOVES the way the Aspie mind works and you can see it in his kids. They trust him and with trust comes good things.

So DS starts tomorrow and I give him until Wednesday when the honeymoon period is over and he has his transitional issues. ;) But thankfully, now I know he's in good hands when he's there.
