All right I just got off a phone conference about the results of my son's EEG, I am more than a little baffled. He has 'high alpha' waves going on which can mean over arousal, anxiety and depression and it 'could' also indicate ASD issues. Getting the frontal lobes turned back on was mentioned.
From my notes I have written down, 'Fully consistent for ASD' but not diagnostic of ASD. The therapist seems very keen on not 'labeling' my son but looking at the most effective treatment for him, which obviously from her point of view is neuralfeedback sessions.
She also mentioned the Ketogenic diet. Has anyone tried this with their child? I found an article on Psychology Today about this diet for kids with ASD.

Wikipedia is your friend:

The ketogenic diet may be a successful treatment for several rare metabolic diseases. Case reports of two children indicate that it may be a possible treatment for astrocytomas, a type of brain tumour. Autism, depression, migraine headaches, polycystic ovary syndrome, and type 2 diabetes mellitus have also been shown to improve in small case studies. There is evidence from uncontrolled clinical trials and studies in animal models that the ketogenic diet can provide symptomatic and disease-modifying activity in a broad range of neurodegenerative disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, and may be protective in traumatic brain injury and stroke. Because tumour cells are inefficient in processing ketone bodies for energy, the ketogenic diet has also been suggested as a treatment for cancer. As of 2008, there is insufficient evidence to support the use of the ketogenic diet as a treatment for these conditions; however, clinical trials for many of them are ongoing.

Is your child epileptic? That's the only condition that seems to be alleviated by this diet.

No he does not have epilepsy, he fainted once, while we were on a trip to New Mexico, in the hotel room, out of nowhere, keeled over. Came to quickly. His primary care physician said, oh he was just probably dehydrated. Has not had any fainting spells since then so...
I know Wikipedia well, I was probably on that page already today but thanks for the link.....
But it was mentioned during the phone conference today, this diet and studies have been done treating ASD kids with this diet. Some responded miraculously well and others no response at all.
I referenced an article about that in my first post on this thread....
Your son's fainting spell sounds familiar. My son had 3 or 4 episodes years ago when he blacked out very suddenly and recovered right away. The black outs were enough to cause injury because he would drop like a stone and hit something. They were not able to find anything on an EEG. A friend of my sister's who is a nurse was of the opinion that the EEG they did was not comprehensive enough. I'm interested in what you said about your son's EEG. I wasn't aware of any diagnostic use for an ASD. Is this something new?

The keto diet is not healthy for children. I know two people who have tried variations of it. Both due to severe epilepsy with their children. If your child is not severely epileptic the risks greatly outweigh the benefits.
