Remember I was so worried that the speech therapist wouldn't pick up on problems with my son during individual assessment....but her feedback was spot on and I'm impressed! :D

Bottom line.....She said that he has spikes on the scores....ranging from 5yr to 11.3yr...he is 8.3yr.....So if you didn't do a propper assessment he would have tested average for his age....but the thing that stood out was that his comprehension and knowledge of words tested 11.3yr (3 yr above his age)...but his expression and putting it in sequence tested 5yr!(3 yr under age)....and that this is typicle of AS and this is causing his frustration! :?

She also mentioned some kind of hearing device that she would recommend that he puts in his ear and teacher around her neck...to eliminate background noice and help him hear her voice....and then as therapy progresses....to slowly take it away.....Has any of you had experience with this? :?:

I love speech therapists :) It seems so unexpected, but it seems they are really running with the challenges presented by ASD's, not shying away at all, and supplying real world solutions. It's not perfect, we're still waiting for them to absorb and teach kid slang (which won't happen, of course), but maybe because it was so unexpected to me, to need that service, I've been impressed.

No experience with the headset and ear piece, but it makes sense to me. One caution is realize your son could find the solution more annoying than the problem, but I don't know how you'd know if you don't try it. Since many classrooms are already set up for speech amplification it probably isn't a huge change to consider.

I scored about average on two of the tests they did, and then they did a nonliteral language test... bottom 0.1%tile! Ugh!

I loved the first ST I had, but then I got a new one and she was creepy and patronizing... and there wasn't anyone else to work with me... so I quit.

DW....we can try the earpiece for 3 months.....my worry is my sons tactile sensitivity...he can't stand earplugs in his ears! And I'm worried he will loose it...apparantly it's VERY expensive! 8O

Thanks so much for sharing. This is actually very helpful to us as we are considering getting a speech evaluation before psych eval and it's good to know they (at least some) are good at catching some subtle variations in speech level. Very helpful! And very happy for you that your son got a great assessment.

There was a girl at the center where we used to go who had one of the hearing aide type things with the little microphone that the teacher would wear. They had a small school there. The mother talked about it a lot and said that it made a huge improvement in her daughters comprehension.
