My daughter has her first session tomorrow. We found an "educational" psychologist who has worked with many Apsie teens. Her approach is to meet in her home (not a formal office setting) or take my daughter out in the community..out for a soda, out to dinner and work in social settings.

I think this behavior skills coaching is the best route for now....
Still amazes me that one month ago my daughter and I had never even heard of AS.

The same thing happened to me. I didn't know even if I might have it- I am still undiagnosed, but my mum only noticed it because she had to do a type of project on aspergers and she noticed that a lot of the things that she found out were like me. That was about half a year ago.

Really is bad that these people don't get reviewed they allot of them around that focus on 1 part instead of keeping an open mind....

As for me I got sick of my mother calling me lazy and that - so I started looking on the net - I diagnosed myself with shyness & social anxiety 1yr and half later I got to the As diagnoses mainly since they where only giving me pill's ...

This is very exciting that you are getting this social skills coaching for your daughter. I think that it will help a lot.

We have my 10 year old going to a social skills class, and I think that's helping a bunch, but the one on one coaching could be GREAT! I would love to have that kind of individual attention for my son.

I look forward to hearing about how your daughter likes the coaching, and if you see that it's helping your daughter feel more comfortable in social situations.

It might help your daughter to keep a list of questions, things she does not understand, etc. to review with the therapist.

I still do this at work and then ocassionally go over it with friends.

Another thing that work has done is to send me to focused seminars (every other month or so). Typically this is part of the executive/talent dev program. In my case it is also part of afirmative action.

Sample seminar topics: how to make people feel valued; how to infuence and work in groups; how to mentor; how to evaluate sucesses and failures for growth, etc
