So we had the appointment with neurologist yesterday! It was very upsetting....this man is very very rude!
He has this dominating overpowering attitude....this caused my gfg to act out big time....Even in the dr second sentence with my son he told my son to drop his attitude! My son didnt even hear this....he often didnt answer the docs questions, because I could see he didnt understand the questions! But thankfully there is nothing mager wrong in the structure of the brain! This dr then started going of about gfg being the biggest manipulator he has ever seen! That there is NOTHING wrong with him....I asked him what about the pdoc diagnosis of ASD and the auditory prosessing problems the ST diagnosed and the SI problems the OT diagnosed....he brushed it all of as being manipulation!! !! !! OMW!! !! ! I wanted to cry!
I asked him about the meds the pdoc gave son, he said I can do what I want, but there is no pills for manipulation! That its all we as parents fault for allowing our child to become this way!
So where does this leave us as pt? Who do we believe?
Hopefully we will be seing the pdoc this afternoon! Wonder what her take on this will be? When she saw the EEG results she said she would immediatly put him on anti epilepticum! The Neuro got so caught up in all the issues, he never did give us an answer regarding the negative EEG....just said nothing to worry about!

Never said anything about the EEG! Really?
I'd love to know how a child can "manipulate" an EEG!
:?
Let us know what your other doctors have to say.

There are plenty of narcissistic and even sadistic people in the medical and psychiatric profession. Perfect place to have power over vulnerable people. Move on to someone else. Don't put up with crap like that.

Amazing.

No, I don't believe he is right. Because you don't believe he is right, and you know your child. Don't let ANY expert make you doubt that.

I had been called manipulative a few times when I was younger, but it was never my intention to be so. The issue was my needs were a little different than those of most people and most people had a difficult time understanding that.

It doesn't sound like this neurologist had a very good bedside manner. If he did not answer your questions though I would ask him to clarify and explain what the cause of the abnormal EEG is.

I took my son to a neuro once, who told me mentally ret*d kids behave the way my son does. Meanwhile, he had ALL my sons recent testing including an updated psychological that CLEARLY stated my son was quite opposite of MR. This doc spent all of 10 mins with us, didnt read ANY of his evals, and TOLD me my son needed a self contained class with small teacher to student ratio. Based on WHAT??? It was the most bizarre appt I had ever been on, and when I mentioned Aspergers to him he said he didnt see it. Well then what the heck did he see to make those statements??

Needless to say I never took my son back to that neuro. At least read the reports that I just handed you, at least know that you are hearing behaviors of an ave to above ave intelligence kid before you make such statements.

It makes you really wonder where some of these docs got their degrees!

Several of you had problems with neurologists. Maybe they are not the docs to go to for ASD. Maybe they are trained in everything but ASD. You wouldn't think so but they seem to deny this condition exists.

I have a lot of really bad issues with neuro's. First one I saw told my GP that I had a disk pressing on my sciatic nerve and then did a nerve study and found that there was nerve damage but said the he believed my pain was all in my head??? Uh ok!
The last neuro I had was a surgeon who accepted me as a study patient even though I told him that I once had a diagnosis of Ankylosing spondylitis but he ignored this (most docs did, I was dx at age 27 when the nerve damage first happened but every doc after that would poo poo on it, was finally dx properly after moving to France). So instead of looking into my AS (also known as Ankylosing Spondylitis) he just went ahead and stuck the artificial disk in my back which he promised would fix all the pain that I had been suffering since my later twenties. Now that wonderful disk replacement, which is too large, has forced my very weak and fragile spine to bow inward (toward my belly button also called lordosis) and is tearing and stretching my nerves.
I now have an ortho surgeon who tells me that nothing can be done about the nerve damage and he can not understand and Neuro doing nothing about obvious nerve damage. He says he may be able to stabilize my spine but I will more that likely have pain the rest of my life.
Right now I just got my blood work back and know why I basically sleep most of the day and night....I am very anemic, lets hope I dont have cancer from my Anti TNF medication.
Also I cant tell you how many doctors told me that my Bi Polar son had nothing wrong with him and it was all my fault, I was too lenient with him and I gave him everything he wanted.....I started asking them if they wanted to take him home with them for a few days ;).
I know its hard when doctors act that way especially when they have a smug smile on their face.....I had a social worker laugh at me as he sat there and told me what a horrible Mother I was because my son was mentally ill and had a drug problem. I know its hard but dont listen to them they are a** holes!
Find a good doctor, which is hard to do, I know from having kids with ASD and mental illness to have Aspergers and chronic pain and auto immune disease.
Good luck, and you are a good Mom and ASD kids do not know how to manipulate. They may appear to be manipulative but it is no intentional as was mentioned.

I found who helped my son, and who came up with the correct diagnosis was his therapist and a Paychiatrist. I will never take my son to a neuro again for his Asperger issues!

I think the best to do is ask here on the forum for other peoples recommendations.

Our neuro was the one who told me that it WAS AS, that I needed to find a better environment for my son, that he wasn't crazy (when school said he was psychotic) and got him off of all meds. I think this guy is a godsend! He deals with autism spectrum all the time, and could see that even though DS could appropriately answer questions and look him in the eye - it was as.

I find that MDs in general can super huge egos, and have trouble hearing you. It is hard to find ones you can connect with regardless of their specialties.

Ok, I think maybe I do not understand. I thought the purpose of going to the neuro was to get an EEG to see if there were signs of epilepsy or tumors or something like that. Right?

What would make a neurologist think he had expertise on anything other than brain structure. Spectrum stuff does not show on an EEG, does it? How could he even think he has the expertise to say your child is a manipulator? He is not a shrink, anyway. so not an expert in behavioral issues. Maybe I just do not understand what neurologists do, but I think maybe he needs a pdoc, if he has delusions about being an expert in other fields he did not study.

Unless, I am missing something.

Regardless he seems like he has issues and I would try to calm down. If there is nothing structurally wrong, that is a good thing, so the heck with him. Just deal with the other issues with the professionals you trust.

I agree with ASDMommy: sometimes, you get what you need, and have to toss or ignore the other stuff. It's no different than your housepainter giving you childrearing advice - if your house is clean, you can just ignore it.

Just because somebody has initials after their name doesn't mean they know everything. This applies even if they think they do. Hang in there, lovelyboy!

I tend to disregard any opinion delievered by an @sshole. That includes professional opinions.

I had a gynecologist who told me the reason I didn't have a period for a year was because I was too fat
(I was chubby, she was wafer-thin). Went to a different doctor who did proper tests and found out my ovaries were riddled with cysts. Screw you, anorexic gyno!
- Sorry, that was kind of off-topic but felt good anyway. :D

When I visit doctors I tend to limit what I discuss to what is immediately relevant, and having AS is usually entirely irrelevant.

To the last poster, concerning that gynecologist, if you had sustained any damage from your condition going untreated, that would have been malpractice. PCOS is one of those things that a gynecologist should immediately think when they have an overweight woman who hasn't had periods for a while.
