Hopefully some good news for France
A law may be passed that would prevent the Psychiatrist's that believe that Autism is a psychosis to not be able to attend to autistic people. They will also not be paid by the government insurance if parents insist on taking their children to them. Apparently a person who is working for the government is in the position to press this law has an autistic child. Hopefully the documentary is a help as well. The reason the documentary had to be banned is because the "doctors" decided that they felt things they said were taken out of context and they did not want to be a part of the documentary, its the way things work here. In the US if you sign a contract to be in a documentary you have no way to back out but its not that way here. Still it is only banned in France and there are many who do not want people to think France is full of nutso doctors who all believe this, I am one of those people. I can tell you that these types of Psychiatrists are in a more small minority now but they still exist and we need to get them out and the system for Autistic people needs to be changed. My husband told me that the woman he works with met someone whos child was severe and non verbal and she was not diagnosed until she was 13. That was a few years ago. That is just madness!
My husband and I have been very busy with my illness, I now have anemia to add to the list and we need to find the cause of that but I, at least, have a date for the spinal hospital in March. Next week I go to be re examined for Asperger's, Ill be sure to let you know how that goes. I personally dont think its a really good time for that when Im so sick but I may as well get over it. As my husband says, even when Im sick, Im still autistic Still I would really like to make the video of my daughters amazing transformation due to early intervention as soon as I can but we have to send the old camcorder tapes to be made digital so we can have it on the computer. We are mainly pushing for more diagnosis especially of Asperger's and early intervention for severe classic autism.
Lets all hope and those of us here push for this new law so that these pedophile Psychiatrists will never be able to harm another child or person be they the parent of an autistic child or person or the child or person themselves. Its very difficult to overcome a doctor telling you that your child has these issues because of something you did wrong. I was told it was my fault that my son was Bi Polar, they even denied his diagnosis until he was 12 and just told me I was a bad Mother. If I did not have my daughter a few years after him I may have continued to believe them but I raised my kids the same and my daughter and my son were worlds apart. I knew it was not my fault!
As an Aspie who has recently moved to France I have been horrified to learn of the way ASCs are 'treated' here. I really hope that this proposed change in the law happens, and quickly! Is there any organisation or group I should join in order to support moves to help France to join (at least) the 20th century on this issue? I can offer anything except money....
You need to go to MDPH (maison des personnes handicape). They will either want to evaluate you or if have a medical certificate in French saying you have Asperger's. You will get money for being a handicapped person and the ALD insurance which is 100% medical coverage. You go to the French Consulate or contact them to get the address of French doctors that are in your country that can translate your medical certificate....you need to do this in advance of your arrival....or just ask them what you should do. If you have French nationality already things will be easier. Just make sure you get things rolling as soon as you get here because the paper work is slow. I see you have recently moved to France so forget the French consulate thing.....just go to your MDPH the one closest to where you live. Make sure you bring every type of paperwork you can think of and bring some pictures of yourself....like passport type pictures. Depending on how high functioning you are, you may be able to work with autistic children or drive the specialized taxi services. They need more people who understand autistic kids.
Sorry I have recently developed anemia....I have an auto immune disease so I did not read your post correctly. Since you are already here just get your handicapped status, this way you will get your money and your insurance coverage. I live outside Lyon and I and my children have been treated wonderfully. My kids are doing great, they take very good care of me due to my disease and my autism. I go to get re evaluated on Wednesday so I will post how that goes .
Thank you for this advice, unexpected as it was. I'm glad you have had a positive experience of treatment here, and hope that your reassessment goes well. I hadn't thought of seeking to be recognised as 'handicapped', though I understand this can lead to an extra 'part' meaning I would pay less tax on my (ill health) pension. My OH and I are fairly 'high functioning' - I worked as a Parish Priest for 33 years until last summer. She is less well than I, due to long-term mental health issues. We both have our diagnostic paperwork, and it would not be difficult to obtain official translations if necessary.
I was really think more terms of campaigning organisations to which I might lend my weight (got plenty of that to spare!)....
