Hello All,

I am back again, been busy for a little bit but I have a new set of issues.

My son just turned 7 the other day (yay!!) He is dx Aspergers and ADHD. He currently takes focalin 5mg for his adhd symptoms. They just added Kapvay which they said would help with his anxiety but it has not helped yet. It has only been one week.

He worries about pretty much everything. We went to a hotel in Orlando for his birthday and he was paranoid that someone was going to go into our hotel room, even after I explained that we are the only ones with the key and I put up the do not disturb sign. He kept asking me to check the door and what if someone goes in there and takes our stuff. He must have asked me 20 times, I always stayed calm and told him that everything was going to be fine and that I locked the door.

We went to Hollywood Studios and he went on the Star Tours, Star wars ride one time. This is is fav ride and we usually go about 6 times a visit. We then went to magic kingdom and he was afraid to go on its a small world, but he did it. HE then wanted to leave.

He barely wants to leave the hotel and wants to stay in the room and play on the computer or wii in the room or go to the pool. This is fine by me because I just wanted to let him relax and have fun and I really dont like the parks much either. But he has gotten to a point where he never wants to leave our home or say like at the hotel even to go eat. He wants to either order something or go through a drive thru.

I am not sure if I should force him to go out or what to do. He used to be a kid that would cry when we went home and now he never wants to leave the house.

His doctor is very anti meds and doesnt want to put him on anything for his anxiety but it is crippling my son. Everyday he goes into school and asks the teacher if there is going to be a fire drill because he is afraid of them. They have a plan where they let him know in advance and remove him early on when there is one. But I found out from his speech therapist they had an unexpected "pulled" alarm the other day and now he is paranoid all day at school. Wearing his lunch headphones all day in case of another alarm.

Sorry this is so long, I just hate seeing my little guy so stressed out.

He is a kid :(

I know every kid is different, but my son (age 11) takes kapvay for the ADHD (specifically to reduce hyperactivity) - not anxiety. He takes an SSRI (Luvox is the one he takes, but there are several others, and he only takes half the typical dose for his age/size) for the anxiety, particularly what we call "getting stuck" on negative thoughts and fears. Also, the Focalin may increase his anxiety as it is a stimulant, whereas the kapvay is a non-stimulant medication. So maybe the doc is trying to change the ADHD meds to a non-stimulant?

I think the doc was hoping the kapvay would help balance out the anxiety that went up with the stimulant. The doc that prescribed is his neurologist. They said that he rarely writes for antidepressants and to probably take him to a child psychiatrist.
