We do make sure we tell him how proud of him we are and I tell him that I hope he is proud of himself. I'm not sure if he understands what it means to be proud of himself but I'll keep saying it!
I hope I am right about DS, as well! In our case it was true, though. School was terrifying until mid 3rd grade. After that things became easier. It is true by mid 3rd grade she was finally diagnosed (properly) and we got a therapist specialized in Autism, which probably helped A LOT. But you already know what he has and you probably got help, so if that is the case: yes, things will get easier with time. They grow up, mature, and things get easier. I mean, they will always represent extra work, but they learn how to cope better at school and teachers stop sending notes. My daughter is in 7th grade and now I AM the one sending notes and scheduling appointments.
