Hi. I'm new here. I just found this website because Tony Attwood mentioned it in some lectures he gave that I saw on DVD. It's great to find a site focused on AS, particularly one that can give me the perspective of both aspies and their parents.

My 5 year old son has AS. He is in kindergarten and currently receiving services under 504. I've come to the conclusion that I'd rather have him classified as special ed, both because I'd prefer that he have measurable goals towards which they must work and because I'd like the procedural protections available under IDEA.

Does anybody have any experience in convincing a CSE committee to change from 504 to special ed? I'm trying to figure out what to say to them. In our district, the 504 committee and the CSE committee are basically the same people. I'm not even necessarily looking for different or more services, just the goals.

Assuming I get the reclassification, does anybody have any thoughts about or good resources for drawing up IEP goals for a young child with high functioning AS?

Thanks.

The WrightsLaw website is a great resource to know your rights as a parent and how to advocate for your child. If you check it out enough, you should be able to contact some local resources and organizations to assist you.

we had our son changed from a 504 to special ed,. but only after the system horribly failed him. we'd actually put off having him change to special ed because we had hoped the 504 would work. what we found , though, is that the 504 guidelines were only being followed in some cases~some of son's teachers thought he was just lazy , obstinate, and rude~so that they gave them the right to mistreat him...
he's not at the school anymore, thank goodness.

If I remember correctly, the OASIS website (http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger) gives lots of info about IEPs and such.
