Short back story: my brother lives in northern Michigan and is trying to finish up a messy divorce and has one 2 and half year old son.

My brother and I are not super close. I'm guessing it's partly because we live so far apart. It may also be that he's been to busy dealing with a crazy shop-a-holic wife. So I guess what I'm thinking is he is in a tough spot but also close to starting over and could use a nice gesture like this.

Now I know nothing about what is appropriate for 2-3 year old. Also, my nephew is just now talking more and walking so he is a little bit behind. When I was a kid I thought Transformers were great because they were a robot and car all in one, but especially that they were like a 3D puzzle. Something like this could challenge dexterity and motor skills.

Since he is so young, I wondered if a Playschool version would be appropriate. I'd also like honest feedback if you think this is to complicated for a 2.5 year old. I have no idea.

It is hard to say because it really depends on his interests. Is he NT or on the spectrum? Do you have an idea what his special interests are? I think it would be an awesome toy, but it really depends on how typical his interests are. I wish my son would like that stuff, this way I could play with that stuff, too. My son's interests are not mainstream, and if your nephew is like that then he may be very particular like him. If he is NT, I bet he would love it, and if he is autistic with interests in pretend play with vehicles or things that morph, I bet he would love it, too.

Spectrum stuff is unknown. I heard he was tested for autism, but not diagnosed as having it. Yet, just the fact the mother thought it was worth testing for makes me wonder.

Anyway, I thought this was a slim possible of engaging his motor skill development, but I'm not experienced with kids and wasn't sure.

If I can't decide on this I might send something just to my brother instead. My parents are going up there to visit so I thought I'd send something along. I can't go with them because of my college classes so I'm watching the house.

It is a great idea. I did not mean to sound discouraging. I only mentioned special interests because my son is so picky about toys and I know kids or so different from one another. Using toys for motor skills is an excellent idea.

I don't think these are too complex for a 2.5 yo. We had some when my boys were younger and they "transform" pretty much automatically. I think it would be a nice gesture and I think these characters are appealing to many kids that age. One can never tell what will be a real hit with any particular kid but I think this would be a good bet.

Thanks for the feedback. I might look through the toy aisle at Walmart.

I think most 2.5 yo boys would like this, whether NT or AS. Even if he's not able to tranform it yet, it would still be a fun toy.

Another good bet for this age would be anything with Thomas the Train -- the wooden ones hold up better than the plastic ones.

I have an almost 2.5 year old boy, he'd love it. We actually have one similar that my (now almost) 14 year old ASD son got when he was very little. It is still being played with at our place by the younger ones. I think it is playskool brand too, my first transformer or something like that... good for those who like vehicles, robots, clicky things!
I'm sure your brother would appreciate the thought you are putting in to this and your nephew will love it I'm sure. If he doesn't there is always the box it comes in to play with, those are a hit too!
