Write it down, make a list or picture schedule!
My son, 7 HF Aspergers, can read, write, speak beautifully...but it is CLEAR that auditory input is the last way he learns things. He is very visual, and responds best to written directions, examples, showing him, etc.
I have told my son things like, "pick up your plate when you are done eaing", "Pick up your clothes when you are done changing", "put your vidoe games away when you are done playing" and so on, every day, mustiple times a day for most of what he does, every day.
Well, I finally had enough of speaking, and wrote him out directions on laminated cards for each of his daily activities. After a few short days of handing him the cards when he is eating, dressing, doing schoolwork, video games, etc...he is now doing it WITHOUT being told, and WITHOUT the cards.
It just amazes me how his brain works. I wish I could write a card for every single interaction in life, but most things arent so static, but for those that are pretty routine, the written word works amazing.
Just wanted to share. I think this can be adjusted to any functioning level, use pics, single words or detailed instructions when all esle fails, it just might work!
