The son who went to SC informed me today that he got a tattoo. It's on his back. He sent me a picture of it. Supposedly it's the Chinese symbol for tiger. I did what he should have done to begin with and Googled it. He got the Chinese symbol for bean curd. I've informed him of this and he got mad at me. There was no reason for that, I didn't hold him down and make him get it. Why couldn't he have gotten something normal like the Grim Reaper or a pot leaf or a rebel flag? He got bean curd. Now he's going to get it covered with something else he said. I suggested he just get the Chinese symbol for rice.

This kind of thing is exactly why I worry about him being unsupervised.

Bean curd. Jesus.

 Oh god.... my sides.... I'm sorry for laughing, but that is hilarious.
Bean Curd..... seriously ! !??

I honestly can't fathom why so many people get foreign stuff permanently inked onto themselves when they don't even understand the language and what it says.

Kanji (the kind of character he's got tattooed on him) are often good for a laugh, when people get really stupid ones tattooed onto their skin.
:-D Seriously.... bean curd.... what a pillock.

I absolutely love your attitude about this.

I have no idea how he could salvage that, but this is the kanji for rice -

Thanks. I can't help but laugh either. And you know that from now until the day I die I will always and forever call him "bean curd". I used to call him "Boo" but now it's GOT TO BE "Bean Curd".

I have two tats and his dad has one. I don't mind him getting a tat, not at all. In fact, I would have taken him two years ago to get one when his best friends mother took him and he got all those. But no. He wanted to be careful and think about it. And he got "bean curd". All this consideration, for nothing. Plus, why get "tiger" anyway? He's not a cat.

He's also mad because I'm calling him "Bean Curd" now. Well, that's what he gets. He should have thought it through more and checked it out before setting himself up to be called Tofu forever.

That's one of the reasons I have no tattoos.
I don't like any particular design enough to want it permanently committed to my skin, and I don't want something written in a language I am not familiar with.
It could have been worse though; it could have been kick me, or I'm a douche!

funny, yes, but it's a fine line between teasing and abuse. if he's upset, maybe it's time to lay off. he made a mistake. he shouldn't have to pay for it forever beyond what's inevitable. he'll appreciate your discretion.

Frances, from what I've read, your son is actually lucky. I've read a lot of Americans who get Chinese character tattoos get something that is actually degrading or obscene.

I really don't see a problem with teasing him for being such a numpty.

And yes, he certainly got off lightly.
Just think ! He might have got this, thinking it genuinely meant 'power' 8O

He got "bean curd" tattoed on his back, in a big letter. YES he should be teased. Relentlessly. A tat is forever. So is the s**t you get from one.

:-) Absolutely !

He's a big boy, and I'm sure it will encourage him to be more prudent in the future instead of doing something else equally as idiotic without thinking it through first.

:-D If he gets fed up of being called 'Bean curd', then he can always go with my helpful cover up suggestion.

I would tease him just as bad over any stupid decision. Lets say he came home with some titty dancer for a wife. He would never hear the end of that, just like he won't over this. Nope, sorry. He knows. He was raised in this house and he would give no quarter to anybody else who did that stupid s**t.

When he comes home I'm taking him out to lunch at the Chinese place here in town. And I'm gonna show them his back and tell them I want that. Szechuan style.

This made me think. I'm getting one now myself. I want "I don't f*****g understand Chinese language" on me.
