I'm struggling with my little sister Madison who is going on 12 this year. Academically she has struggled since Kindergarden. We feel as a family that teacher being gone a few days a week THE WHOLE SCHOOL YEAR! Hurt her academically. Sadly she's in 5th grade and still struggles. 25-8= Is UH? I don't know! And sitting there confused and lost. She is in 5th grade and is getting into veritable such as 100y + 3=103 Obviously this takes more than one step which she gets confused on. It's odd though division is a struggle yet 4 x 3=12 she knows multiplication fairly well. Even better at times than her 8th grade older sister (going on 14).
I question perhaps Autism as an issue or some other disorder. Mom says ADD. Perhaps that too. I say Autism since she has extreme focus on interest in her case lately Teen Beach Movie (movie and soundtrack) playing it on repeat. over and over and over and over. So intense focus on special interest. But she's not non verbal she can speak and so forth fine.
It's stressful and hard since I feel we can't help her with her work 24/7. We can't be there with her at school all the time. Sooner or later she'll have to learn to do it on her own. Not guess at stuff but KNOW HOW to do it!! !!
We are considering perhaps virtual schooling. Would this be good for someone who struggles academically.
I'm at a lose on how to help her. It's so frustrating! 25-8 and varitables are hard for you NEWS FLASH IT'S JUST GOING TO KEEP GETTING HARDER! and she barely understands the basics!
Variables are abstract and that may be her problem. Have you tried manipulatives? Does she understand how a pan balance works? Google "Hands On Equations" to get an idea of how to do this, and you can use your own manipulatives and a pan balance drawing that you make yourself for the equal sign, if need be.
