Do I need a referral from my daughter's primary physician to get a screening?

Whom to call first?

I tried to call a neurologist, but they told me they are out of network and would cost 2K for a screening!! !

I am just looking for a screening to confirm what we already suspect is Asperger's.

Daughter's father (my ex) is not interested / does not believe she has a problem, but it's his insurance.

Does she even need a screening, if I'm not going to be using it for anything other than confirmation / information? She will not be going on an IEP.

What are some ways of getting around that cost?

slow down there girl...
first of all, how do you know she won't need an IEP ?...my son who's very high-functioning has one, but only had one put in place at the age of 13......
next: screening...primary docs don't usually do these, and it IMO is best to get a screening from someone versed in ASDs...You'll find, though, unfortunately that most docs who do screenings don't take insurance ( at least in my part of the world)...we've had 2 evals done for our son~one was by a psychiatrist that cost $800, the other was by a neuropsych & that cost $1500....
if you can hold out until your child is of school age ( even early intervention age which is , i think, 3 years old), sometimes the school system will pick up the tab of a screening.

Thanks, Ster.

I called her primary physician, who recommended we start with a screening by a private psychiatrist, and see if we can't get the school district to help with the cost.

The reason I am averse to an IEP is we have done one before and she was being pulled out of the only class she likes (chorus) to work with the special ed teacher, which wasn't working.

But next year is High School... a whole nother ball game.

it's such a shame when, in the name of following the IEP, that a kid's favorite class is missed :x
..........if it's an issue, i'd tell them that it's unacceptable for your child to miss his/her favorite class. an IEP is supposed to *help*, not make the kid detest school !
hope you can get the school to pick up the tab.....another piece of advice, though. our district wouldn't pick up the tab for the private eval, but would've had their own district psychiatrist due it for free......i'd contact your school system before you go much further!
