These past couple of weeks my nonverbal and nearly day potty trained 10yo son has become really weepy at times and REFUSES to use the potty. These two issues do not seem to be outwardly related so I'm hoping somebody here can give me some advice or insight on either or if there could be something going on that he is unable to tell us?

FYI. he's not on a special diet and seems to be regular bowel-wise. His appetite doesn't seem to have changed and we haven't altered his medications in any way either. What could be the problem?

Does he go to school or is he homeschooled? If he goes to school, something could be happening there that is upsetting him. That could be causing both problems. I would check to see if there have been any changes there. It may not even be something bad---just that something changed, and that made him upset.

As a child grows and develops, the need for and response to various medications changes...along with checking out any external social issues like school etc. it might be a good idea to consult with his prescribing physician to consider a medication change.

I hate to say it but at that age he could also be starting puberty - hormones start flowing in new amounts long before the outward signs begin.

However I would bet on a change somewhere in his life - it could be something that we would consider minor, but if it is out of his control he is expressing control in the one area that he can.

Good Luck

I am thinking he could be overwhelmed by something...though I wouldn't know what. But just based on myself the more overwhelmed I am the harder it is to function at my usual level.
