Hiya,

I'm still waiting for an assessment of my son (we moved area, so had to start the referral process again!) and i'm noticing that he is struggling to sit still, especially when in an unfamiliar environment or when there is a lot going on. He swings his legs under the table, he claps repeatedly, wiggles his fingers, and probably a whole load more that i'm only just starting to recognise. Is this stimming?

Yeah, it's stimming. Don't tell him to stop or anything though. It's natural for autistics to stim and it helps them (myself included) to feel better when upset. Stimming even prevents meltdowns and shutdowns.

Thanks! I wasn't planning on trying to stop it, more to understand it. I'm glad to know that it is a normal aspie trait. :)

It sounds like he took the move pretty well.

Attempting to stop his current self-coping behaviors can lead to aggressive behaviors. But helping him learn other self-coping behaviors can be healthy.
