Hi,

My son is almost 11, in 5th grade and generally doing well. Lately he's been imitating his sister and as annoying as that is, it seems like it's compulsive. That is, it happens very very often, he doesn't seem to be trying to annoy her, and he can't seem to stop. Bless her heart, my daughter takes it in stride and it's usually me, not her, who gets fed up. When I ask him why he does this he says he doesn't like her voice because it sounds nasal.

Any experience with anything like this? I want to be understanding but this must stop.

Thanks,

I remember imitating or repeating what my brother said and vice versa when we were kids, to drive each other crazy, but this sounds like more than that. Some kids on the spectrum are really sensitive to voices and types of noises. I think you could suggest he sit on the other side of the room when it was getting to be too much for him, but that imitating her could be considered rude.
(If I had a nickle for every time I tell one of my kids that "some people might consider XXX rude," I'd be a rich lady!)
