Melatonin, in doses of around 500 mcg (.5 mg) for an adult, or half that for a kid, virtually never has any side effects. In larger doses it may make one sleep longer, and wake up feeling groggy.

Aside from those, I don't know of any.

I haven't personally used it, but I have a friend that uses it for her child. She says it works great for sleeping (dd had some sleep issues). No side effects at all with her. She was told that it should be used along with DHA. That is was someone at the vitamin store told her and she uses both together with good results.

My kids and I have used melatonin for at least 10 years with no side effects. Melatonin is a natural substance that your body makes, but I find it has a short "window." Either you fall asleep then, or the effect is countered. The body also seems to develop a resistance to it, or at least make an anti-melatonin substance. I have to alternate with benadryl.

Melatonin is the 8th Wonder of the World! Until the age 14 (give or take two years), I had chronic insomnia. I could never fall asleep during the day, and at night, it would take me hours. If I knew about Melatonin back then, my life would have been so much better.

Very true, it is a chemical that basically tells the brain that it is time to go to sleep. It was recomended to us for Z about 4 years ago by one of his psychiatrists. He still takes it around bedtime with no ill side effects. When he wakes at 2:00 a.m. he can have another dose. The doctor told us that even if he got into the bottle [fortunately a problem we have never had with him] that there would be no problem.

As I said it helps him fall asleep, sleeping a full night is another problem we are still working on.

Melatonin is a life saver for me and I have never had any side effects from it.
